High seas treasure on Delaware

Local historian Steven Ujifusa takes you inside the planning, creation and mothballing of the S.S. United States, the world’s fastest ocean liner, which now stands idle and rusting at a pier in South Philadelphia. What’s next for the liner? Will she be scrapped? Or will her owner, Norwegian Cruise Lines, convert her into a boutique cruiser? Story is accompanied by links to archival photos and videos. Check out the photo slideshow on the right.

Like William Francis Gibbs, Ujifusa has been fascinated by ships and the sea since childhood. He lives and works in Philadelphia.  A native of Chappaqua, New York, he received his masters from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design in 2005 and his B.A. in history from Harvard University in 2001.
