Groundbreaking for 100K house in Fishtown
The 100K House is an experiment in sustainable, affordable urban housing—with the emphasis on affordable. Simply put, the 100K House is an attempt to build a modern, Platinum LEED certified “green” house for $100,000, defying the conventional wisdom that environmentally friendly houses are necessarily more expensive than standard homes. 100K House Spokesman Nic Darling said the focus of the project is on process and “the right way to build.”
After more than a year of planning and design (and redesign), the 100K House broke ground on September 30 at their building site in Fishtown on the corner of Susquehanna and Ambler streets. The informal groundbreaking ceremony included 100K House founder Chad Ludeman, Darling, architects from Interface Studio Architects and a representative from Manor Hill Contracting, the builder. Construction is now underway on the house and is scheduled for completion by December 23.
