Associated Press: Digging deep in Pittsburgh for rail line
AP’s Dan Nephin reports on a 1.2-mile extension of Pittsburgh’s commuter light rail system under the Allegheny River. The $435 million project will bring rail access to Pittsburgh’s North Shore neighborhood, which houses such attractions as Heinz Field, PNC Park, and soon, a slots casino.
The Port Authority estimates the North Shore Connector will be completed in 2011. Eighty percent of the project is funded through a federal grant, 16.66% coming from the state, and the rest from the local government.
