The Pedal Co-Op: Recycling and Composting Pioneers

University City Review: West Philly Pedal Co-op picks up momentum and just about everything else, too

The cyclist organization known as the Pedal Co-op has been gaining business over the past few years with the idea that recyclables can be transported using bicycles rather than trucks in order to reduce carbon emissions and to save money… or to make money, depending on how you look at it.

The Pedal Co-op’s Services now include composting, as well as deliveries, and even residential moving. With six trailers, the organization now serves thirty-four businesses in addition to residential customers. The co-op is acquiring about 1-2 new customers a week. The organic waste is hauled down to the garden at University City High School where the Co-op has constructed a composting facility made out of fifty-gallon drums.
