NEast Links: Dog park, Tacony History Day and more

This week's Philadelphia Weekly cover story provided an in-depth look into a growing problem in Philadelphia high schools: assaults on Asian students. Author George Miller talked to students and staff members from some of the schools with the more obvious problems -- one being Fels High School in Lawncrest. Fels recently made the state's Persistently Dangerous Schools list.

Some residents are pushing for a dog park in Pennypack Park at Pine Road. Northeast resident Jen James is behind the movement, and is currently asking those interested to sign a petition supporting the park.

Tacony will celebrate its 18th annual History Day on Sept. 19. Tacony has captured the attention of the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia in recent months, and has had the agency's support while pursuing designation as a historic neighborhood. Tacony-born historian and author Dr. Harry Silcox will hold the first of three local-history lectures at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Tacony Baptist Church (also known as Tacony's Historic Grindhouse Church), Disston and Hegerman streets.

The Northeast Times will be celebrated for its 75 years of service to the community during a business-card exchange hosted by the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Sept. 23. It will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Marsico ballroom, 3515 Welsh Road.

New Flyers goalie Ray Emery was at the Flyers Skate Zone at 10990 Decatur Rd. in order to repair his image for several missed practiced. Players from five city rinks attended, and most were from West Philadelphia, North Philadelphia, Kensington and Camden.
