TOMORROW: Grand opening of Fair Food Farmstand at Reading Terminal

On Friday, Oct. 2 Reading Terminal Market will celebrate the grand opening of the new Fair Food Farmstand as the signature farmers’ market for the region’s growing local food movement. In response to a demand for locally grown and produced farm products, the

Fair Food Farmstand has emerged as a full-time farmer’s market. With a space twice as large and additional hours, Fair Food will now offer customers increased variety and flexibility that far exceeds the city’s other farmers markets.

Farmers, growers, producers and chefs from throughout the region will meet at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 2 to unveil the new Fair Food Farmstand, which will offer organic and sustainably-raised food products from more than 90 local farms and producers including vegetables, fruits, humanely-raised meats and poultry, eggs, cheese, dairy and value-added farm products seven days a week. Support for the local food movement from individual consumers and local, state and national organizations, such as Pennsylvania’s “Buy Fresh, Buy Local” campaign, has exploded in recent years. The expansion of the Fair Food Farmstand allows Reading Terminal Market to maintain and enhance its reputation as a leader of this movement.

The opening of the Fair Food Farmstand signifies a return to the Reading Terminal Market’s roots, emphasizing the historical character and function of the Market as America’s premier farmers’ market. Reading Terminal Market originated in 1892 as a public market, providing a wide variety of produce, meat, fish, bakery and dairy products, and other raw and prepared food, brought to a public market in the center of the city by farmers, growers, producers and chefs. Reading Terminal Market is also one of the City’s leading destinations, with more than five million visits each year.
