Weekly Press: ECA forum at Friends Center extols energy efficiency and conservation

The word “green” has inherited a new significance in the past several years, advancing its status well beyond what was originally a humble place in the color spectrum. As the environmental movement gains unprecedented attention, green takes flight as the representation of an idea that will help us live together on a healthy planet. And not without a little glamour! While costly technology has made environmentalism seem like an elitist idea, the Energy Coordinating Agency of Philadelphia (ECA) has been active in raising awareness about some of the more modest, yet effective means of participating in a clean energy future.

That was the message at the ECA recently hosted a conference at the Friends Center that focused on weatherization and energy conservation for homes, businesses, and our local municipal government. Although ECA does embrace traditional renewable energy resources such as wind and solar, the organization’s main function is to promote simple methods of energy conservation as a way for families to save money and to help reduce carbon emissions. Voicing support for ECA at the Friends Center were keynote speakers that included State Senator Shirley Kitchen, Katherine Gajewski of Greenworks Philadelphia, and various representatives of PECO, PGW, and Pennsylvania workforce development agencies.
