Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Philly mag sees trees, calls it Pennypack

It’s rare that the Northeast makes it into the pages of Philadelphia magazine unless it’s a subtle insult. And while the feature story in the June issue of the publication get a few shots in against our reason, we’re more concerned about the level of editing.

As in, it needs some.

Writer Vicki Glembocki wrote about the September murder-suicide of a husband and wife in Pine Valley in her story “What Really Happened Inside 121 Greycourt Road?”

The feature is an attempt at investigation, though it provides no real answers surrounding the crime. To make matters worse, Glembcoki and her editors forgot a very simple thing: it’s important to check a map when reporting.

You’d think since Philly mag covers the Northeast so infrequently, they’d take extra steps to make sure to get everything right. Instead they got the location of the story wrong.

The 100-block of Greycourt Rd. is in Pine Valley, not “Pennypack Park,”  as Glembocki wrote. It seems the Philly mag editors will label slightly wooded area in our region as Pennypack.

But that must be the level of coverage we should expect from a publication who only comes calling for the high-profile crime stories.

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.
