Northeast Metro: July 21 edition

Here’s a roundup of the latest edition of NEast Philly Metro, which ran yesterday. The main story — full text below — is about Krispy Kreme coming to Fox Chase. Metro also ran our stories about the 8th District’s National Night Out poster contest, and installments of Real NEastate and Your Personal CFO.

Fresh from an eight-week training session in Virginia, Brian Zaslow and Keith Morgan brought free doughnuts and water to last week’s meeting of the Fox Chase Town Watch and Homeowners Association.

The two are set to open a Krispy Kreme franchise on Oxford Avenue near Hasbrook Avenue in November.

“It’s a very positive, magical environment,” Zaslow, a Northeast resident, said of Krispy Kreme.

The new location — the first in the franchise’s return to Philadelphia — will be in an old Popeye’s Chicken. And while renovations will be made on the facade, and the interior will be completely redone, Zaslow said there are no plan to change the footprint of the building or existing drive-thru space.

Morgan promised benefits to the community — doughnuts and coffee aside — including sponsorship of Fox Rok Athletic Association teams and the creation of about 50 new full- and part-time jobs.

Zaslow chose Fox Chase for a flagship location because of his connection to the area, promising real estate market and overall sense of community. He told residents during the May meeting of the Town Watch/Homeowners Association that he and Morgan plan to open 20 locations in the area over the next seven years. The likely second location will be in Center City, due to open in June 2011.

While Zaslow and Morgan have the rights to franchise Krispy Kreme in 14 counties, Zaslow, who lives less than five minutes from the Fox Chase location, said he’s “ready to bring some smiles to the neighborhood.”
