Weekend News Briefs: 1/28 – 1/30

FRIDAY — One person died in a Summerdale fire early Friday morning. Crews spent an hour extinguishing the blaze on the 4700-block of Roosevelt Boulevard, and discovered a man’s body inside after the smoke and flames had been put out.

SATURDAY — Police discovered a burning body in a car Saturday morning in the parking lot of Franklin Mills Mall. It’s not been determined if the person was killed before the car was set on fire. The vehicle was parked in the movie theater parking lot, and was discovered around 11 a.m. An autopsy will reveal the cause of death.

—  A 25-year-old was fatally shot in the head Saturday night while in a car at Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard. The man was a passenger in the car, which was stopped at a red light when the shots came through shortly after 8 p.m. More information has not been released.

SUNDAY — Police are searching for more details in the shooting death of a man early Sunday morning. The 29-year-old was found dead on the 5500-block of Hill Creek Circle after police responded to numerous calls about gunshots just before 1 a.m. More information has not been released.

PGW crews evacuated Holy Innocents St. Paul’s Church at Tyson and Torresdale avenues in Tacony due to a gas main break. The smell of gas led crews to discover the 6-inch break around 9 Sunday morning. The intersection was blocked off.
