Weekend News Briefs: 2/25 – 2/27

Friday — Two women in their early 20s died Friday morning in a single-car crash in Somerton. Melissa Lees, 22, of the 800-block of Barlow Street; and Caitlin Hennessey, 23, died when their vehicle lost control at Byberry and Worthington Roads around 2 a.m. The 20-year-old driver of the car suffered non-life-threatening injuries and faces DUI charges.

— Holy Family basketball coach John O’Connor has resigned after being accused of assaulting one of his players. Though the District Attorney decided the accusations do not warrant criminal charges, O’Connor resigned after a TV appearance in which player Matt Kravchuk refused to accept O’Connor’s apology.

— Danny Savage has launched his website for his 7th District Council campaign. The Frankford native will face off against incumbent Maria Quinones-Sanchez.

Saturday — The Philadelphia Police Department has suspended a 15th District officer with intent to dismiss after she reportedly wrote a bad check. Rabecca Bozeman, 33, is accused of knowingly writing a bad check to a business on the 2100-block of Cottman Avenue in August. She’s charged with writing bad checks, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.
