Weekend News Briefs: 3/11 – 3/13

Friday — The Philadelphia Fire Department has determined the cause of the deadly explosion in Tacony back in January. As PGW crews tried to fix a high pressure gas leak Jan. 18, a furnace inside a chiropractic office ignited the blaze. The explosion killed 19-year-old PGW employee Mark Keeley.

— John William Fleet III has pleaded no contest to setting a puppy on fire last year. Fleet was arrested last winter after pouring rubbing alcohol on the puppy and then lighting it on fire. Fleet was immediately sentenced to two to seven years in prison.

— Two adults and a child were injured late Thursday in a car accident at Welsh Road and Holme Avenue in Holme Circle. A pickup truck reportedly t-boned an SUV around 11:30 p.m., pushing the SUV into a utility pole and onto its side. The two adults and a 12-year-old were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Saturday — A 4-year-old boy was shot Saturday morning in Wissinoming. The boy was shot once in side around 10 a.m. on the 5000-block of Homestead Street. Further details are not yet available.

— 2nd District Police shot a man early Saturday morning at a disturbance call on the 1100-block of Princeton Avenue. Police arrived to find the man with a knife to his throat, and requested a taser when the man would not drop the knife. An officer shot the man once in the chest when he lunged at the officers with a knife. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and the involved officers are on desk duty pending an investigation.
