Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Media outlets’ maps missing Cottman and Tyson avenues

What’s wrong with this description: “K-mart on Roosevelt Boulevard near Welsh Road”?

It’s how the Philadelphia Inquirer and Action News described a K-mart where a man robbed the jewelry counter with his daughter in tow. Except, there’s no K-mart on the Boulevard near Welsh Road.

There is a K-mart off the Boulevard near Tyson and Cottman avenues, though. In a completely different neighborhood and zip code from the mythical one near Welsh.

More than anything, we’re curious how Welsh Road got a mention, and what sort of map the Inky and Action News are looking at. We couldn’t find a reference at all in some other media outlets, and NBC played it safe by mentioning as few details as possible.

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.
