Document that would dictate how Chestnut Hill College can be developed heads to City Council
Chestnut Hill College has received the planning commission’s blessing for a document that will dictate how the campus can be developed.
Commissioners last week voted in support of the college’s proposed Institutional Development District document.
Planners said the document contains restrictions on density and other issues that are far more stringent than those that govern the University of Pennsylvania, Temple, or other city colleges.
PCPC staff acknowledges that the current campus and the nearby site for planned expansion, the Sugar Loaf campus, are in environmentally sensitive areas. But some Chestnut Hill residents, including representatives of Friends of the Wissahickon, said the IDD allows more development than the land should have on it. Other residents said they supported the college’s growth, which was good for their community, and believed the college was taking appropriate steps to protect the watershed.
The proposal now goes to city council.
