How nice to pass by Chestnut Street pocket park, which recently reopened after receiving some tweaks and upgrades, and notice that something called Bike Caffe has set up shop.

The portable espresso stand — a contraption that mounts a kiosk to a four-wheeled bicycle — has been offering hot and iced drinks, as well as a few pastries and treats, for about a month now.

More importantly, it serves as a beacon to the park, whose re-design also sought to increase visitors. (As promised CCD has scheduled a full slate of Weds. and Fri. lunchtime concerts, as well.)

Festooned with balloons and bolstered by a clapboard on the sidewalk that announces its presence, the Center City District initiative is just another example of the group's smart understanding of what makes places work.

The biking barista operation is based in England, and has since contracted to open franchises in Denver, Pittsburgh, and Philly. In Chestnut Park, proceeds from the rental of the space from CCD go toward maintaining the park, which is owned and operated by CCD.
