Right NEast/Wrong NEast: the Daily News thinks the Northeast is pretty small

Two men are arrested for running a fencing operation.

One lives at Pearson and Cottage. One lives at Magee and Jackson. The items they stole were recovered at Torresdale and Longshore.

The first address is in Torresdale; the others are in Tacony.

But when Ryan Shantz and Michael Mager were arrested, the Daily News took to its blog and reported the following:

Can’t read that? It says “two Torresdale men” were arrested and charged.

Doesn’t look like the DN used a map for this one, because even if they couldn’t figure out the neighborhood name, the editors should at least have been able to determine the Pearson Street and Jackson Street addresses are too far apart to be the same neighborhood.

Here’s what we think happened: the paper saw the Torresdale Avenue address of the recovered items and stuck the same label on the whole operation. Because, obviously, the Northeast is so small and disconnected that its residents couldn’t possibly associated with people of other neighborhoods.

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.
