DVRPC shelves 422 tolling plan
The money collected from tolls was supposed to fund road improvements as well as the extension of regional rail service from Norristown parallel to the highway, a major suburban corridor.
The plan ran into sustained opposition from residents and local politicians.
The DVRPC released a statement Wednesday saying that the organization was reconsidering tolling in light of the findings of a transportation funding commission formed by Gov. Corbett. The commission recommended a state-wide increase in transportation spending funded by increases in taxes and fees.
“We heard the public loud and clear, and we realize tolling may not be the best option for funding 422 at this time,” said DVRPC executive director Barry Seymour said in a statement, which went on to say that if the proposed state-wide plan passes, money may be made available for the corridor to pay for the improvements targeted in the tolling scenario.
The statement said the idea may have to be revisited if the commission’s proposal fails.
