City, CCD declare success on lane closure test

The city and Center City District have declared success on a test to close a lane of traffic for two major roads in Center City.

The two-week trial was meant to judge the impact on traffic if a travel lane was taken out of Market Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard between 15th and 20th streets to make way for pedestrian and bicyclist improvements.

Traffic flow conformed to projections and no major incidents were reported, according to Andrew Stober, chief of staff at the Mayor’s Office of Transportation and Utilities.

Stober said traffic data on the project should be available for release soon.

Center City District wants to use the extra space to put in a separated cycle track and improved pedestrian crossings.

Any project could cost between $10 million and $20 million, and a funding source has yet to be identified.
