Finkelpearl is director of the Queens Museum of Art, administered New York City’s Percent for Art Program, and is an artist and scholar.

Urban Heat Islands: Is Philly the New Tropics?

Tuesday, April 17, 6-8:30pm. Academy of Natural Sciences, 1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Is Philadelphia the new tropics? As part of the Academy’s bicentennial Urban Sustainability Forum series, Dr. Laurence S. Kalkstein (University of Miami) and Dr. David J. Sailor (Portland State University) will discuss their research on urban heat islands, how they affect densely populated cities, and the role urban heat islands play in global climate change. Kalkstein and Sailor have been involved with Philadelphia’s heat alert warning system, a model for the country, which has significantly reduced heat-related deaths in the city. The talk will be followed by a panel discussion, along with Katherine Gajewski and Scott Schwarz from the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability. $5, or free for members and students. Register online.

Homeowner Workshop: Wood Window Maintenance and Repairs

The Preservation Alliance is hosting a hands-on workshop series in Roxborough this April with staff from the Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust.
