Right NEast/Wrong NEast: When Bustleton Avenue becomes a neighborhood

In reporting the tragic death of an elderly man Oct. 22, Action News got right on the story. In the wrong neighborhood.

Imagine turning on the news to hear a 78-year-old man was killed in Bustleton – could it be someone you know? Buy pay close enough attention and you’ll come to realize the man was struck by a car at Cottman and Bustleton avenues. That’s roughly two miles away and in a different zip code. Another case of the main stream media assuming street and neighborhood names are the same thing.

The focus of this story should be on the victim, but Action News’ error leaves us wondering – if the location isn’t accurate, what other details of this story are wrong?

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.
