Castor Gardens students surprised with Temple scholarships

Carlos Denos and Lauren Lam, residents of Castor Gardens, each received a surprise $12,000 scholarship earlier this month from Temple University.  They’re both second-year students and are studying Sport and Recreation Management and Tourism and Hospitality Management, respectively.

From Temple University:

Twenty Temple School of Tourism and Hospitality Management students competing for a single $10,000 scholarship from an anonymous donor were surprised at the annual Musser Awards when Korman Communities founder Steven H. Korman revealed himself as the donor, raised the amount to $12,000 and awarded the scholarship to all of the students – a $240,000 donation in all.

Each finalist was asked to submit a letter to their then-anonymous donor. Common themes were the students’ gratitude for their families’ sacrifices to help them attend college and a desire to give back to Temple. Korman’s $240,000 donation – in support of Temple’s recently announced five-year, $100 million fundraising campaign for student scholarships – capped a night emphasizing the university’s commitment to reducing student debt.

The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management is the largest and most comprehensive school of tourism and hospitality management in the greater Philadelphia region. The Musser Awards, in its 16th year, is the highest honor awarded by Temple’s Fox School of Business for outstanding achievement, leadership and commitment to the community by a distinguished member of business.
