Rhawnhurst couple sentenced in faith-healing death loses second child

For the second time in four years, a Rhawnhurst family whose religion shuns traditional medicine has allowed an infant son to pass away.

Now, many are wondering if state or local officials could have acted to prevent further tragedy.

In 2009, Herbert and Catherine Schaible allowed their 2-year-old son, Kent, to die from a bout of bacterial pneumonia. Citing their affiliation with the Juniata Park-based First Century Gospel Church, the couple did not seek traditional medical treatment and instead focused on “faith healing.”

When the case reached court in 2011, they were convicted of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment, and sentenced to 10 years of probation.
