National Night Out set for August 6

The annual National Night Out event is back tonight, and neighborhoods across the Northeast are participating in the country-wide “night out against crime.”

Every summer, Americans are encouraged to leave the outside lights on, lock up their houses and meet with their neighbors, local politicians and police officers. The events are meant as a way to unite neighbors and their community groups against crime.

The 2013 celebration is especially important to Fox Chase residents, who were unable to hold the event last year. Now it’s back, scheduled for its long-standing spot at Fox Chase Elementary School, 500 Rhawn St.

“My office has been able to provide the logistical support to contact vendors, solicit donations, and advertise the event as much as possible,” Pa. Rep. Kevin Boyle, D-172nd, said. He worked with Fox Chase Town Watch President Steve Phillips to bring the event back. Nearly 30 local businesses will be on hand, along with emergency response vehicles, face painters and food.

“We have seen a real groundswell of support from the community, local businesses, and elected officials who are happy to see the event come back,” said Pa. Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-170th, who also represents Fox Chase.

Further information about that event is available through the Office of Kevin Boyle at 215-331-2600.

Fox Chasers aren’t the only ones looking forward to National Night Out. Others in the Northeast will participate in the kick-off rally at the Target shopping center at 7400 Bustleton Ave. The event is one of two official kick-off events hosted by Town Watch Integrated Services. Mayfair will celebrate at Cottman and Frankford at 7 p.m. [information updated].

All Northeast events will features food, entertainment and information tables. The Fox Chase event begins at 6 p.m., and the kick-off rally starts at 6:30 p.m.
