Part of I-95 named after two Philly police officers

A stretch of I-95 was dedicated Tuesday in honor of two Philadelphia police officers who died in the line of duty.

Philadelphia Highway Patrol Officer Charles P. O’Hanlon, 40, was killed in 1985 when a tractor-trailer crashed into the rear of his unmarked patrol vehicle. He was 40 years old. Highway Patrol Office Brian Lorenzo, 48, died in 2012 when a drunk driver crashed head-on into his motorcycle. 

“Designating this 12-mile stretch of I-95 as the ‘Officers O’Hanlon and Lorenzo Memorial Highway’ is a fitting tribute to two men who were loved by their families and their fellow officers,” Pa. Sen. Mike Stack said during the dedication ceremony. “When they died, each man had served about a generation of Philadelphians – and they did it with honor.”

Mayor Michael Nutter called the officers “heroic men to their families, friends and communities.”

Legislation signed last fall designates the area between Allegheny Avenue to Academy Road “Officers O’Hanlon and Lorenzo Memorial Highway.” Signs are on both sides of the highway.
