Kids health initiative will kick off with Fall Fest in Tacony

A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control shows an increase in childhood obesity in Pennsylvania.

With that in mind, residents of the 6th Council District [map] will have new resources available to them to help them stay fit. Councilman Bobby Henon, D-6th, announced late Monday his “Philly Play!” initiative to promote fun and accessible fitness and wellness within the district.

“The best way for our children to learn the importance of a physically active and healthy lifestyle – and set the tone for a healthy future – is to do so together with their families,” Henon said in his announcement. “There are a variety of city resources available for families that Philly Play! brings together, and I want everyone to see that physical fitness is fun, too.”

The initiative will officially kick off Sept. 28 with a Fall Fest in Tacony. The 6700- and 6800-blocks of Torresdale Avenue will be lined with street fair activities, family checkup areas, health insurance information tables, an obstacle course and more.

Philly Play! will coordinate and help connect district residents with existing resources, and also aims to incorporate new things like a map to find your nearest play space or bike route, and a way to share your favorite workout spots.

A “Biking with Bobby” event is already scheduled for Oct. 12 for those looking to ride on two wheels around the Lincoln Loop that connects Rowland Avenue, Rhawn Street, Lexington Avenue and Ryan Avenue.
