A decade of murder in Philadelphia

“In the 10 years between 2003 and 2012, there were 3,442 murders and 15,277 shootings in Philadelphia.” This, according to stats compiled for a joint reporting project by AxisPhilly and City Paper.

The data is available on this map, which shows the number of murders and shootings in Philadelphia over the last decade.

The reporting project looks at one small pocket of North Philadelphia, where a murder 10 years ago sparked several retaliatory shootings. North Philadelphia or not, crime research shows retaliatory shootings aren’t uncommon, and that many Philadelphia shooting victims are shot close to home.

The map shows the date of each crime, the type of weapon used and the age and race of the victim.
