December 16: Traffic manuals gone wild | Vision Zero street changes | Delaware Generating Station

We already introduced you to the popular old-school traffic engineering manuals that try to apply highway design concepts to urban streets. Now meet the Trip Generation Manual, which appears to drastically overestimate the number of car trips produced by new buildings. This matters because these manuals are frequently used to lend technical authority to political arguments against traffic calming.

Some of the traffic calming interventions that Councilwoman Bass’s Vision Zero resolution has in mind: “narrower travel lanes to reduce car speeds, pinched intersections, raised crosswalks, more separated bike infrastructure, lower speed limits, and automated speed enforcement, as well as speed bumps”
