Philly Free Streets, Part 3, moves to North Broad on Aug. 11

Philadelphia is shutting down North Broad Street, Saturday, August 11, to show off the major artery.

This third edition of Philly Free Streets will close the street to cars from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Erie Avenue to City Hall.

“This is for everybody, all ages and abilities we want everybody to come out enjoy the day and enjoy the Philadelphia experience from the ground,” said Mike Caroll of the of the city’s Office and Transportation and Infrastructure.

Mayor Jim Kenney says to make the event fun there will be activities throughout the route.

“A beach at Broad and Master, an actual beach, never been done before!” Kenney said. “A health, fitness, art, music, and community programming by Temple University at Montgomery Avenue, community paint day by Mural Arts Philadelphia and the historic Uptown Theater at Susquehanna.”

Shalimar Thomas of North Broad Renaissance the nonprofit that is working to improve the special services district, says they want to show off revitalization efforts that have been going on in the area.

“This corridor has a vibrancy and history that we can show off to the world and I’m excited to celebrate with all of you and a few thousand of our closest friends on August 11th.”

Previous free streets shut down parts of South Street or 5th and 3rd, so this is a more high-profile artery to hand over to bikes and pedestrians.
