Area horseman & fisherman have united in support of the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club Co-Op, a magnificent program that for years has brought delight to children and youth in North Philadelphia.8
On October 31, 2009, at 7:00pm, the First Annual Horseman & Fisherman Youth Benefit will be held at the First District Plaza, 3801 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA. This event is being held in support and in conjunction with the Strawberry Mansion SMART Business Association.
Strawberry Mansion has been an unusual home for horses and horsemen for decades. The resulting homegrown community program has endeavored to provide neighborhood children and youth with positive ways to spend their leisure time outdoors. The Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club Co-Op, founded by longtime resident Ellis Ferrell, has taught local youth to ride and care for horses while encouraging academic excellence.
Like many community based initiatives, this ever-more-important program now struggles to continue.
This fundraiser -- borne of the desperate need for greater support to keep alive the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club -- marks a new collaboration between the local business association, local fishermen, local churches, and the urban cowboys themselves, in a struggling North Philadelphia neighborhood.
Proceeds from this tax deductible fundraiser will help neighborhood youth and the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club Co-Op in the following ways:
Ø Learn outdoor activities
Ø Gain from mentorship of strong males from their community
Ø Learn alternative sports and enrichment skills
Tickets for this fundraiser are $25.00. (Tax-deductible.)
Friends of Fletcher Street is under the fiscal sponsorship of MAP Holistic Community Development, Inc., a not-for-profit 501c3 tax-exempt organization. Ticket sales and donations can be made payable to "Friends of Fletcher Street" and sent to 3121 West Norris Street, Philadelphia, PA 19121.
