Gregory Schaaf, Ph.D, Director of the Center for Indigenous Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, New Mexico, will discuss the significance of wampum belts and peace trees, with a special focus on the 1682 Treaty of Friendship that paved the way for the founding of Pennsylvania. Native Americans from the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation will pay tribute to the Treaty with singing, dancing and drumming. On display will be paintings from the HSP collection that were inspired by the 1682 event and rare boxes made from the wood of the fallen Treaty Tree from the collection of the Penn Treaty Museum. Author Ken Milano will also be available to discuss and sign his book “The History of Penn Treaty Park.”
