Open to the public and members
This coach trip to Brooklyn s shoreline will highlight the dramatic transformation of the urban landscape by top designers into various new uses for people to enjoy. Our first stop will be an urban farm called Added Value, where we will have a guided tour of the grounds. Added Value is a nonprofit organization that promotes the sustainable development of the Red Hook section of Brooklyn by nurturing a new generation of young leaders. It provides long-term training to neighborhood teenagers and educational programming to elementary school students. Added Value also works with thousands of volunteers to revitalize local parks; transform vacant lots into vibrant urban farms; and improve access to healthy, safe, nutritious, and affordable food. From the farm we will travel a short distance to the Pier 44 Waterfront Garden for a guided tour. This perennial garden was designed by Lynden Miller, one of America s foremost public garden designers and the designer of the Conservatory Garden in Central Park, as well as other prominent locations. The Waterfront Garden and Jetty are part of a 1/2-mile public walkway that includes a NY Water Taxi stop and is home to the Waterfront Museum & Showboat Barge. We will then board the bus and travel along the East River to the Brooklyn Bridge, where we will have lunch on our own at your choice of nearby restaurants. After lunch we will visit Brooklyn Bridge Park. This world-class, sustainable waterfront park stretching along 1.3 miles along Brooklyn s East River shoreline is being constructed in phases. We will have a guided tour of Pier 1. Designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Pier 1 opened in March 2010 and includes rolling hills, riverfront promenades, innovative play areas, the Granite Prospect, and stunning views of the Manhattan skyline. We plan to return to Philadelphia by 6 or 6:30 pm. Please bring sunscreen and a hat if we have a sunny day. Pick-ups will be at the Horticulture Center and PHS headquarters at 20th and Arch streets.
