Eastern State Penitentiary — An Introduction to Preservation for Working Professionals
Sponsored by Drexel University's new Leading Edge Historic Preservation Network
This workshop is a unique opportunity to introduce participants to the fundamental categories of and approaches to preservation in America. Eastern State Penitentiary serves as a living case study. A brief introduction to the history of the working penitentiary will be followed by discussions of:
- The issues from 1971-2009 covering abandonment, decay, rescue, preservation, and management approaches
- Preservation philosophy as shown with the Main Gate structure
- Stabilization of the Center Tower
- Rehabilitation of the site offices in the Bertillion Building
