Preservation Alliance Members-Only Private Tour of the Baptist TemplePrint Page

August 17, 2010 - 5:45pm - 7:30pm

After sitting empty for the last 30 years, the Baptist Temple recently reopened to the public following an extensive renovation and restoration. The 36,000 square foot building now serves as a center for arts and cultural performances, as well as a setting for meetings, symposia and other events.

The Baptist Temple, built in 1891 as a home for Temple University founder Russell H. Conwell’s congregation, has hosted some of the country’s most prominent intellectual and political figures throughout its history, including Martin Luther King Jr., President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Margaret Mead, Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller. The building was designated as a Landmark Building by the American Institute of Architects in 2003 and added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Place in 1984.  The architecture firm RMJM worked to meticulously preserve the building’s historic features, including all 140 windows which were recreated and restored to their original condition.
