Preservation Alliance walking tour programPrint Page

May 9, 2010 - 2:00pm - 4:00pm

The Preservation Alliance Architectural Walking Tours will run, rain or shine, Saturdays at 10am and 2pm, Sundays at 2pm and Wednesdays at 6pm from May through October. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students with ID. Children 10 and under are free if accompanied by an adult. Reservations are not required. May/June tour schedule follows.

Tours are led by a lively group of experienced and enthusiastic volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds who share a passion for architecture, urban design and social history. Tours range from Center City locales, including Society Hill and Rittenhouse Square, to historic neighborhoods, such as Fishtown and Chestnut Hill, to suburban enclaves including Haddonfield and Media. There are also specialized tours such as the popular “Littlest Streets” and “Art Deco Philadelphia.”

The tours, which originated at the Foundation for Architecture in 1986, have enhanced understanding of the region’s architectural heritage for thousands of participants and have received awards and accolades. Philadelphia magazine honored the walking tours with a 2008 “Best of Philly” Award, noting they are the “best reason to take a walk.”

The Preservation Alliance
The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia actively promotes the appreciation, protection, and revitalization of the Philadelphia region’s historic buildings, communities, and landscapes. A 501c3 non-profit membership organization, the Alliance leads in setting the agenda for preservation issues of regional importance and advocates strong public preservation policies.

Jane’s Walk
Jane’s Walk is a series of free neighborhood walking tours that help people get in touch with their environment and with each other, by bridging social and geographic gaps and creating spaces for cities to discover themselves. Jane’s Walk honors the legacy and ideas of urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs (The Death and Life of Great American Cities) who championed the interests of local residents and pedestrians over a car-centered approach to planning. Jane’s Walk helps knit people together into a strong and resourceful community, instilling belonging and encouraging civic leadership.
