Tour historic Fishtown/Kensington burial grounds with local author on May 8 (please note date change!)Print Page

May 8, 2011 - 11:00am - 1:00pm
May 8, 2011

Local historian and author Ken Milano will lead a two-hour tour of Palmer Cemetery and 11 other former burial grounds on May 8.

Milano will highlight some of the spots he wrote about in the recently released Palmer Cemetery and the Historic Burial Grounds of Kensington & Fishtown. Among the st ops is Palmer Cemetery, the only one of 12 cemeteries in the Fishtown section of Kensington that still exists. Founded prior to 1748, Milano says Palmer is one of the oldest cemetereries in Philadelphia and is the final resting place of the area's founding families and soliders from every war fought by colonists and then Americans, from the French and Indian War through Desert Storm.

The tour will begin at 11 am at the Rocket Cat Cafe, on the northeast corner of Frankford Avenue & Norris Street. Free street parking is available. The tour encompasses a 3-mile loop through Kensington and Fishtown [mainly Fishtown, the old part of Kensington], ending at Palmer Cemetery at Memphis & Palmer Streets, only a few blocks from the starting point.

Cost of the tour is $20, or for $30, a copy of the book is also included.

Rain date is May 15.
