About the Barnes Foundation:
The Barnes Foundation has been a catalyst for great architecture, as seen in both the 1922 Paul Philippe Cret design for Merion and the 2012 Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects building on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia. Located on 4.5 acres, the two-story, 93,000-square-foot building on the Parkway houses the Foundation's art collection in 12,000 square feet of exhibition space that replicates the scale, proportion, and configuration of the original galleries in Merion. The new Parkway facility is a designated LEED Platinum facility and features a 40,000 gallon rainwater cistern to water the Olin designed gardens, a solar photovoltaic array, extensive daylighting, reclaimed materials and recycling of 90 percent of the building materials from the Youth Study Center which was demolished to make way for the facility.
