Carmen Simulcast

Friday, September 30, 8pm. Independence Mall. The Philadelphia Opera Company’s production of Bizet’s opera Carmen, opens Friday night and they’ll be simulcasting the event live for viewing on Independence Mall. Start camping out by 7pm. Free but registration is required and there is limited space left. Register here.

Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Plaza Party

Saturday, October 1, 12pm-1am. PAFA, 118 N. Broad Street. PAFA is throwing a party to celebrate its new public space, Lenfest Plaza, and the lighting of Claes Oldenburg’s Paint Torch sculpture takes place Saturday. As a bonus, PAFA will offer complimentary admission to their landmark building and free museum tours; the museum’s doors will remain open until 5 p.m. Free. Ticketed events from 7pm-1am.

Laurel Hill’s 3rd Annual Rest in Peace 5K Run

Saturday, October 1, 4pm. Laurel Hill Cemetery, 3822 Ridge Ave. Run through the 78-acre grounds of Laurel Hill in your Halloween costume while taking in the incredible views over the Schuylkill and the cemetery’s beautiful landscape. Prizes will be awarded and a party will follow the run. Race registration starts at 4pm, run begins at 5. And, if running’s not for you, there’s also a “Roll and Stroll” that starts at 3:45.  $35 runner’s registration fee, gets you a race t-shirt, and proceeds will benefit Friends of Laurel Hill Cemetery and Gearing Up.

Fishtown RiverCity Festival

Saturday, October 1, 12-5pm. Penn Treaty Park, N . Delaware Avenue and E. Columbia Ave. Fishtown Neighbors Association will host its 4th annual RiverCity Festival this Saturday, bringing family-friendly activities, food vendors from favorite Fishtown establishments, and live music. The festival kicks off with a 5k run at noon. Free. 

The Great Tour

Saturday, October 1, 8am-8pm. Expert guides from the will take you river to river, from Pine to Vine on a 12-hour tour. The tour will be in three four-hour phases: Old City at 8am (meet at WHYY lobby 150 N. 6th St.), Society Hill at 11am (meet at The Bourse, 5th Street entrance), Society Hill to Center City at 2pm (meet at Philadelphia History Museum at the Atwater Kent, 15 S. 7th St.), Rittenhouse to the Schuylkill at 5pm (meet at City Hall courtyard).  Free.
