Teddy Cruz at Design in Action

Monday, October 10, 5:30-7:30pm, Friends Center, 1501 Cherry Street. Guatemalan-born architect Teddy Cruz speaks on Creative Acts of Citizenship: The Neighborhood as Site of Production at the public symposium for this year’s Design In Action conference. Cruz’s work centers on community engagement, the architecture of border areas, neighborhood revitalization, and how design can support particular community needs and lifestyles. Cruz will begin a Philadelphia project soon. Tickets are $20, and can be purchased online and will benefit the Community Design Collaborative.

Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan Open Houses

Tuesday, October 11, 6-8pm, Myers Recreation Center, 5803 Kingsessing Avenue; Wednesday October 12, 6-8pm, University of Pennsylvania, Fisher Fine Arts Library, 4th Floor, 220 S. 34th Street. The Philadelphia City Planning Commission is gathering community input for the West Philly phase of the city’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan. Learn about the city’s plans for West Philly and take the opportunity to tell the city where you’d like to see better bike and pedestrian amenities.

Kroc Center Tour: Doing the Most Good, and Doing it Green

Thursday, October 13, 4:30-7:30pm. 4200 Wissahickon Avenue. Delaware Valley Smart Growth Alliance hosts a behind-the-scenes tour of the Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center. Check out the recently completed, $72 million massive complex, built on a 12-acre brownfield in Nicetown. Register for the event online.

EAMES: The Architect and the Painter

Thursday, October 13, 7pm. Drexel University, Mitchell Auditorium, 3140 Market Street. Charles and Ray Eames were among the most influential mid-century modern designers, and a new documentary EAMES: The Architect and the Painter, explores their life together and creative partnership. Drexel is screening the film, narrated by James Franco, followed by a discussion with the film’s director Bill Jersey. Free.

BetterBlocksPhilly Opening Party

Friday, October 14, 5:30-9pm. 1701 Christian Street. BetterBlocksPhilly kicks off its South-of-South demonstration project, showing ways to calm traffic, enhance pedestrian space, and encourage economic development. Come for wine and cheese, as well as a talk with Gary Toth, Project for Public Spaces Senior Director of Transportation Initiatives, about traffic-calming and street design. Free.
