Poor Clare’s facade reuse, Smart House gets nod, Royal Theater neglected, upcoming developments before Planning Commission

The demolition of Poor Clare’s Monastery on Girard Avenue is complete, and Naked Philly has renderings of Poor Clare’s replacement, showing the historic façade tacked-on the new building on Girard and brownstone-esque designs for the development along Corinthian Street.

Drexel’s student-run, experimental “Smart House” won a green-energy award from the World Green Energy Symposium for its contribution to green-energy technology innovation, reports The Inquirer.

The Royal Theater, built in the 1920s as an African-American entertainment venue, has sat vacant and deteriorating on South Street for decades. And the Daily News finds the Royal Theater continues to languish under the ownership of Kenny Gamble’s Universal Companies, the famed Philadelphia Sound producer’s nonprofit development arm.

Developments in Old City, University City, and on South Broad presented at the Planning Commission yesterday were met with questions and concerns, Anthony Campisi reports for PlanPhilly. Neighbors of mixed-use projects at 205 Race Street and Broad and South think each is too tall; and commissioners expressed doubts about the University City Science Center’s intent to build an office/research tower at 3400 Market after 30 years of ownership and a lawsuit.
