October 28-30: Halloween picks + Philly Bike Expo

Laurel Hill Halloween Flashlight Tours

Friday, October 28 & Saturday, October 29, 7pm.  Laurel Hill Cemetery, 3822 Ridge Avenue. Take a guided tour of Laurel Hill’s winding, dimly lit pathways and through forests of gravestones and sculptures, as you learn about the history of this enchanting site. Along the way, you’ll meet some of Laurel Hill’s most restless spirits, as portrayed by talented local actors, the Not Ready for Afterlife Players. After the tour, enjoy treats aside fire pits, and check out the Phantom Photo Booth. Tours are an hour long and depart every half hour from 7-9:30pm. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a flashlight. $20 tickets may be purchased online.

Terror Behind the Walls

Friday, October 28-Monday, October 31. Eastern State Penitentiary, 22nd Street and Fairmount Avenue. Eastern State Penitentiary, Fairmount’s historic abandoned prison, continues its annual Terror Behind the Walls scary spectacular nightly with six attractions inside the prison’s cellblocks. Continues through November 12. Purchase tickets online in advance, prices vary $20-$30 per ticket.

Dracula Festival

October 28-29, Rosenbach Museum & Library, 2008-2010 Delancey Place. The Rosenbach celebrates Halloween Bram Stoker style, with its 9th Annual Dracula Festival. The Rosenbach is home to Bram Stoker’s original sketches for Dracula, and you can see them up close on a tourFriday or Sunday. On Saturday, it’s Dracula D.I.Y with crafts, readings aloud from Dracula, and a Dracula-themed shadow-puppet show. Free.  

Pumpkinland

Saturday October 29, 10am-1pm. Headhouse Square Shambles, 2nd and Lombard streets. The Headhouse becomes a citified pumpkin patch and Halloween party with pony rides, a petting zoo, pumpkin decorating and craft activities, costume parade (for kids and dogs) and kid-friendly tunes. At 1:15pm enjoy a community bike ride, with bike safety tips and checks from South Street Mini Station bike officers.

Philly Bike Expo

Saturday, October 29, 10am-6pm and Sunday October 30, 10am-5pm. 23rd Street Armory, 22 S. 23rd Street. Use the bike valet and check out seminars by the Bicycle Coalition and vendor exhibits, take yoga for cyclists, and watch Philly’s top bike mechanics race to assemble a bike the fastest. Tickets are available online, prices range from $7-$20.
