Nine schools could close, Route 47 streamlining out, faulty utilities, Electric Factory ad-wrap

The School Reform Commission recommends closing 9 schools to shed 14,000 seats, fewer than were anticipated as part of the School District’s facilities plan, reports Public School Notebook. Check out a slideshow and an interactive map of schools set to close on PlanPhilly. There are 17 community meetings scheduled for public discussion about the facilities plan. Some community groups have already rallied, like parents at the Edwin M. Stanton School.

It’s back to normal for Route 47, Anthony Campisi reports for PlanPhilly. SEPTA’s stop reductions on the Route 47 bus line did not save enough time along the city’s third busiest bus route. It’s possible the experiment didn’t work because most intersections through South Philly have stop signs, not lights, forcing the bus to stop at most corners anyway.

A faulty power line caused yesterday’s explosion at 34th and Ludlow, igniting methane gas underground, The Daily News reports. Fortunately flying manhole covers didn’t injure anyone. There was also a major gas leak at 7th and Chestnut yesterday afternoon.

City Council will debate a bill to allow the Electric Factory building to be wrapped in ads, despite objections by the Planning Commission and SCRUB, reports NewsWorks.
