Rethinking space on South Philly’s narrow streets

South Philly’s narrow streets can’t accomodate bike lanes. So what are the design alternatives to make small streets safer and more bike-friendly?

That’s the question the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and a team from the Community Design Collaborative have been working on for a few months as part of the Safe Streets for Healthy Neighborhoods initiative. As Anthony Campisi previously reported on PlanPhilly, ideas like traffic-calming bump-outs, different paving surfaces, and signage are in the mix.

To see what the team is working up, head to the next Safe Streets for Healthy Neighborhoods public meeting on February 1, from 6-8pm, at Guerin Recreation Center (1600 Jackson Street). And stay tuned for a final presentation in spring.
