Architecture in Film Series: Mon Oncle

Monday, February 6, 6:30pm, screening begins at 7:15. Philadelphia Center for Architecture, 1218 Arch Street. Mon Oncle (1958), an Academy Award-winning French comedy by Jacques Tati, follows a man’s obsessive response to mid-century modern architecture and consumerism. The monthly series is hosted by John DeFazio, AIA (Architect & Associate Professor at Drexel University) and Nick Grouch, Assoc. AIA. Films begin with a discussion of the relevant themes and elements to notice during the screening and are followed by an informal discussion. Come at 6:30pm before every film for a wine and cheese reception. $5-$10 suggested donation at door.

Regina Lee Blaszczyk: “From Parlor to iPhone: Our Gadgets our Identities”

Kicking off DesignPhiladelphia’s “Visibly Invisible” speaker series, design historian Regina Lee Blaszczyk examines the personal meaning embedded in the things we use every day. West Philly Grown and Urban Roots

Tuesday, February 7, 6:30pm. Drexel University, Bossone Research Center, 3140 Market Street. Drexel’s Westphal College of Media Arts and Design is screening two urban agriculture documentaries Tuesday night. At 6:30 see the short, West Philly Grown, about Mill Creek Farm and at 7:30pm check out Urban Roots, a documentary about urban farming in Detroit. After the films Urban Roots director Mark MacInnis joins a panel of local food experts: Phil Forsyth (Philadelphia Orchard Project), (Ryan Kuck, Greensgrow Farm Manager), Chris Bolden-Newsome (Farmer Educator at Bartram’s Gardens), Dan Pohlig (South Philly Food Co-op), Johanna Rosen (Mill Creek Farm), and Sarah Wu (Mayor’s Office of Sustainability). Dr. Eugenia Victoria Ellis, co-director of the Drexel Engineering Cities Initiative, will moderate the panel. Tickets are $5.

PhillyCAM’s Grand Opening

Wednesday, February 8, 6pm. PhillyCAM, 699 Ranstead Street. PhillyCAM, Philadelphia’s first public access TV station, opens their studios to celebrate their new home.

“Green, Urban, Glocal”

Thursday, February 9, 5:30-7:30pm. Philadelphia Center for Architecture, 1218 Arch Street. The Philadelphia Center for Architecture opens its second annual student design exhibition Thursday night, featuring projects by students from local universities. From 6-7pm panelists from each department will debate each program’s design philosophies, teaching environments, technology, and how the themes of “green, urban, and glocal” fit into each department’s missions. Free, registration required.
