This year's inaugural Weiss Award for Investigative Journalism
went to a team of reporters from the Inquirer
for a series about violence and dangerous learning conditions in the city's public school system. We applaud that excellent series, as well as the news that our contributor Patrick Kerkstra earned Special Recognition
from the judges for his PlanPhilly/Inquirer
series "A Deluge of Deadbeats
." Congrats, Patrick.
Patrick's data-driven analysis of Philadelphia's epic property tax delinquency problems led to proposed legislation in City Council to begin correcting the city's dysfunctional tax collection and foreclosure systems.
The Weiss Award is sponsored by the Center for Public Interest Journalism
at Temple University's School of Communications and Theater.
