Next American City launches Forefront, new site

Visitors to Next American City, Philly’s own nonprofit urban-policy publication, will notice big changes afoot.

Next American City stopped publishing its magazine, and starting Monday, has gone online-only with Forefront, a weekly online publication featuring longform uban policy articles available by subscription.

This week’s inaugural Forefront article is available for free (sponsored by the American Planning Association) and offers a taste of what’s to come for subscribers. The first issue is all about the demise of California’s influential urban redevelopment program and the Tax Increment Financing used to fund its work.

Daily content on americancity.org will stay free, but it’s got a clean new look.

Meanwhile, Next American City’s Brewerytown HQ (2816 W. Girard Ave) is also the Storefront for Urban Innovation, which will be home to salon-style discussions with urban policy thinkers. Next up in their series is a Tactical Urbanism Salon on Saturday, April 28. It’ll be a full afternoon of ideas about temporary urban interventions that can lead to long-term change.
