Into the Picture: Images of Asian Pacific America

Opens Tuesday, September 4, Noon-6pm. Asian Arts Initiative, 1219 Vine Street. Two photography exhibits open at the Asian Arts Initiative on Tuesday. Into the Picture is a show of Corky Lee’s photographs documenting Asian and Pacific Islander communities in the United States – from protests to cultural celebrations. Alongside Lee’s work the Asian Arts Initiative is presenting a slideshow of images by Jano Cohen of Philadelphia’s Chinatown community life. Runs through October 5. Gallery hours Noon-6pm, Tuesday-Friday. Free.

Philadelphia Qualities of Life

Opens Thursday, September 6, 11am-5pm. Philadelphia Art Alliance, 251 S. 18th Street. Philly Works and the Art Alliance present a group exhibition of “works or proposals that showcase exemplary problem-solving ideas to improve life for the citizens of Philadelphia.” Among the show’s features: Creative and Performance Gardens, developed by Jane Rath, SMP Architects, and Kensington High School for the Creative and Performing Arts; Designers Kate Kaman and Joel Erland of Humankind Design developed a proposal for a green roofing system design; and Michael McAllister, Elaine Yuen, and Stuart Bush have developed Cultivating Design Citizenship, a participatory design experience engaging Philadelphians with disabilities. A documentary by Adam Carrigan and Philly Works organizer Will McHale will also be on view, focusing on aspects of the city’s design industries. Admission is $5, $3 for students and seniors. WXPN Free at Noon @ The Porch

Friday, September 7, Noon. The Porch at 30th Street Station, 30th and Market streets. WXPN takes its popular Friday midday concert series outdoors to The Porch with The Sheepdogs this week. Rolling Stone says The Sheepdogs have a “groovy, harmonic, neo-psychedelic sound,” and their new record comes out September 4th. Free, register in advance online.
