Architecture in Film: 2001: A Space Odyssey

Monday, October 1, 6:30pm, film starts at 7pm. Center for Architecture, 1218 Arch Street. Architecture in Film returns for another year, hosted by John DeFazio, architect and Associate Professor at Drexel University. First up, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Films begin with a discussion of the relevant themes and elements to notice during the screening and are followed by an informal discussion. Films are generally shown on the first Monday of each month. $10 donation requested at the door.

Planetarium on the Parkway

Tuesday, October 2, 8:30pm. Eakins Oval, 24th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Join the Franklin Institute’s Chief Astronomer Derrick Pitts as he takes the controls of “Open Air” to highlight features of the night sky. Rain/Overcast Date: Wednesday, October 3, 8:30pm. Free.

Homeowner Workshop: Flat plaster repair and interior finishes

Wednesday, September 26, 6:30pm. The Woodlands, 4000 Woodland Avenue. Join the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia and staff from the Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust for their hands-on workshop series for owners of historic homes. This week’s workshop focuses on repair and maintenance of flat plaster and interior finishes. Workshops will take place inside the historic mansion. Free, but space is limited so register in advance by contacting Melissa Jest at (215) 546-1146 x 6 or via email.

DAG: Jeff Brown and Brian Novello on 205 Race Street

Thursday, October 4, 8am. Center for Architecture, 1218 Arch Street. Jeff Brown (Brown Hill Development) and architect Brian Novello (Peter Gluck and Partners) will join DAG to talk about their proposed mixed-use building at 2nd and Race – alternately praised for its thoughtful design (and potential grocery store) and criticized for far surpassing Old City’s height restriction and high density.
