Forbes may rank Philly the third dirtiest city in terms of air and water pollution, but our fair Schuylkill River is up for honors as Pennsylvania’s River of the Year.
The River of the Year contest highlights river conservation work across the state, and is held by the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers andDepartment of Conservation and Natural Resources.
In recent decades the Schuylkill’s environmental health has made a huge comeback, aided by the riparian buffers along the river which double as the ever-popular Schuylkill Banks greenway. So go on and cast your online vote for the Schuylkill.
If the Schuylkill River wins this year’s competition, the Schuylkill River Development Corporation will put the $10,000 prize toward its popular programs: from kayak trips and movie nights to the development of its new “Secrets of the Schuylkill” riverboat educational tours.
Voting closes on January 18.
