Treecycling starts this weekend

If your holiday greens have turned crispy and it's time to un-deck the halls, don't just toss out your Christmas tree on trash day. Starting this weekend there are opportunities to recycle your tree instead.

The city's Sanitation Convenience Centers will accept undecorated trees for recycling from January 7-19 (8am-6pm, Monday-Saturday). But if that’s not so convenient for you, different neighborhood associations and Greenlimbs are hosting lots of treecycling events across the city this weekend. Undecorated trees collected at these events will be mulched and chipped for use in the city’s parks, gardens, and recreation fields. For each one there is a suggested donation of $3 per wreath/garland and $5 per tree to help offset costs. Here’s the list of this weekend’s treecycling sites:

Saturday, January 5th

  • Weccacoe Playground, Queen Village, 400 Block of Catherine Street, 9am-12pm
  • Palmer Dog Depot, Fishtown/East Kensington, E. Palmer and Blair streets, 9:30am-12:30pm
  • Columbus Square, Central South Philly, 13th and Reed streets, 10am -4pm
  • Liberty Lands Park, Northern Liberties, 3rd and Poplar streets, 10am-4pm
  • Clark Park, University City, 43rd Street and Chester Avenue, 10am-4pm [$10 donation]
  • Markward Rec Center, Rittenhouse/Fitler, Taney and Pine streets, 10am-4pm

  • Sartain Garden, Washington Square West, Sartain and Locust streets, 10am-1pm
