LECTURE: BUILDING PHILADELPHIA: Ed Bacon and the Future of Philadelphia

Tuesday, May 28, 6-8pm, Center for Architecture, 1218 Arch St. As the finale of the 10-part lecture series about the architecture, history and politics of Philadelphia turns its focus to the mid- and late- decades of the 20th century and looks into the future. $20, $15 for AIA and Preservation Alliance members, $10 for students/AIA Associates. SYMPOSIUM: Vacant Land Planning in a Land Bank World

Wednesday, May 29, 8:45am-12:15pm. Philadelphia is (slowly) hatching plans for a land bank. So what does that mean for anyone interested in redeveloping vacant properties in the city? Hear from experts in vacant land management and land bank advocates including the Redevelopment Authority’s John Carpenter, Penn urban studies professor Karen Black, Fels Institute’s John Kromer, and Jennifer Kates who is legislative aide to land bank legislation sponsor Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez. $35, $30 for APA members, $25 for APA-PA chapter members. CONFERENCE: Gardening with History: Planning and Practice

Wednesday, May 29th, 8:30am-5pm, Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania, 100 E. Northwestern Ave. Learn how garden heritage sites consider their missions in the 21st century and discuss best practices in interpretation, curation, stewardship, and planning. RELAX: PHS Pop Up Garden/Mobile Beer Garden Opening

Wednesday, May 29th, 5-10pm, 313 S. Broad Street. Celebrate the opening of Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Pop Up Garden includes a kiosk for picnic-ready food, sangria, root beer, and local craft beers. 

TOUR: Post-Industrial City

Wednesday, May 29th, 6-8pm, Meet in front of former Inquirer Bldg., 400 N. Broad St. Take a Preservation Alliance walking tour along Callowhill Street from Broad Street to the Delaware River to explore a sliver of the city’s industrial past. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students with ID, free for children under 10.

FILM: My Architect

Thursday, May 30th, 7-10pm, Woodmere Art Museum, 9201 Germantown Avenue. As part of a celebration of mid-century architecture in Chestnut Hill, watch a screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary My Architect: A Son’s Journey, about Nathaniel Kahn’s journey in search of his father Louis Kahn through his work. The screening will be followed by a conversation with director Nathaniel Kahn. $15, free for Chestnut Hill Historical Society members.
